Our primary goal in reviewing products is to help readers make informed decisions. We accomplish this by adhering to a strict process that combines our own research with user reviews.
Each review undergoes three stages:
Open Review
Open Review
The first stage is the Open Review, which provides basic information on the product, such as its description, price, and alternatives. The rating for the product is initially set to ‘open’, and users submit reviews via links on the review page to begin the process.
Editorial Review
Editorial Review
The second stage is the Editorial Review, which is a more in-depth review that takes at least three hours to research and write. We rate the product based on numerous factors, and then calculate an editorial review score. This score replaces the open review and is used to determine the overall rating for the product.
User Reviewed
User Reviewed
The third and final stage is User Reviewed. A review receives this badge when we have published our Editorial Review and have received at least three user reviews above a certain trust threshold.
At this point, the overall rating displayed for the product is determined by combining our editorial review score with the average user review score. As we publish more user reviews above the trust threshold, the editorial review score has less influence on the overall rating.
